['heɪmən], Francis, englischer Maler und Grafiker, * Exeter 1708, ✝ London 2. 2. 1776; ausgebildet als Dekorationsmaler, schuf er gegen Ende der 1720er-Jahre Bühnenausstattungen für das Drury Lane Theatre. Zwischen 1740 und 1742 führte er mit Mitarbeitern seiner Werkstatt über 50 Gemälde für die Logen des Theaters in Vauxhall Gardens aus (nur etwa 15 erhalten, zwei in London, Victoria and Albert Museum). Als Vorlagen dienten sowohl eigene wie auch fremde Entwürfe, z. B. seiner Freunde W. Hogarth und H. F. Gravelot, mit dem er auch bei der Illustration von Büchern zusammenarbeitete (u. a. bei S. Richardsons »Pamela«, 1742). Gravelot vermittelte ihm Anregungen des französischen Rokoko. Hayman malte hervorragende Porträts und Genrebilder; zu seiner Zeit wurden besonders seine Historienbilder geschätzt. 1768 gehörte er zu den Mitbegründern der Royal Academy. Er war Lehrer von T. Gainsborough.
